Selection of Jathedar
The following practice has been going on since puratan times: when a Jathedar of a Dal Panth left their body, the 5 Highest Singh Sahibs (usually the Meet Jathedar, Granthi Singh, Laangri Singh or Deghiya Singh, Nishaanchi Singh and Nagaarchi Singh) carried out the selection of the next Jathedar. The jathedar was chosen after evaluating various criteria such as how long the seva of horses had been done, their resilience/physical endurance in rough times, and their day-to-day spiritual practice. The Dal’s new Jathedar will be established before the cremation of the previous Jathedar. The newly selected Jathedar will do the cremation rites (Chanda) of the Physical Saroop of the Sachkhandvaasi Jathedar.

A short post with a lot to think about when it comes to governance and sikh leadership. Do we pick our leadership with the criteria of seva, spiritual practice and resilience in mind? Even Gurbani gives priority to these different traits. Our leadership should model the life we strive to live. Note that these Gursikhs are never looking for leadership or a position, it comes intuitively with their nature.
