Introduction and Sri Nanak Prakaash

In order to make the Poetic Masterpiece GurPrathaap Soorya (aka Suraj Prakaash Granth) widely understood by the worldwide Sangat, Maharaj has pitied this mayadhari with the task of translating the Table of Contents as edited by Bhai Veer Singh Ji. Sooraj Prakash is such a large Granth that oftentimes we may not know where to begin to look for a Prasang. Daas hopes that this translation makes it easier for You – Oh Sangat Ji – to access Suraj Prakash and develop a deeper relationship with Gurbani. All Praises go to Guru Sahib and Great Gursikhs such as MahaKavi Santokh Singh Ji and Bhai Veer Singh Ji.

The Katha of the 9 Following Gurus are included in Suraj Prakaash (GurPrathaap Soorya). Sooraj Prakaash means the Radiance of the Sun. This title is a metaphor (Roopak Alankaar in traditional Indian poetry) for the Guru Sahib’s Glory. Kavi Ji uses the Sun’s Bright Glow as a way for us to better understand The Magnitude of Guru Sahib’s Radiance. Even the sun is limited but it is the most radiant we can fathom from our 5 senses.

In the same way there is one Sun in our solar system but it results in so much. Days, Nights, Months, Seasons, Solstices, and the rays of light which provide us life. Kavi Ji actually uses terms related to the Sun in order to organize Sooraj Prakaash. Each chapter is referred to as an Ansu which means a Divine Ray of Light. These Ansu’s are organized in Raas (referring to 12 Solar Months), Ruths (6 Indian Seasons), and Ain/Ayan (2 Solstices).

11th & 12th Raas: Katha of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji Maharaj

All 6 Ruth’s (Seasons) and Both Ain’s (Solstices) feature the Katha of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj.

Note: Mangal refers to Manglacharan, a traditional way of invoking Divine Help and displaying humility. Traditionally poets in India asked for help from Saaraswathee (personification of the qualities of knowledge, arts, poetry, and learning among many other things).
