Far'ra (Farla)

 Nihung Singhs keep the Far’raa as a form of the Nishaan Sahib flying over their head. This tradition began in the Holy Land of Sri Anandpur Sahib. In 1703 (CE), Ajmer Chand - the King of Bilaspur - attacked Sri Anandpur Sahib. In this war, Bhai Maan Singh (Nishaanchi) charged forward with the Neelaa Nishaan Sahib. After being shot with a bullet by the Pahari Forces, Bhai Maan Singh became wounded and fell down. When Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj heard of this, they took a part of their Neeli Keski (small blue dastaar) and adorned it as a Far’raa. Upon the Command of Kalgidhar Maharaj, Bhai Udai Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Sahib Singh, and the Other Fauja also adorned the Far’raa, becoming human Nishaan Sahibs. This is explained in Bhat Vahiyaa:  
ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੇਟਾ ਮਾਈ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਪੋਤਾ ਬਲੂ ਕਾ...... ਸਾਲ ਸਤ੍ਹਾ ਸੈ ਸਾਠ ਮੱਘਰ ਸੁਦੀ ਪੰਚਮੀ ਰਵੀਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਦਿਹੁ ਦਾ ਝੰਡਾ ਮੈਦਾਨੇ ਜੰਗ ਮੇ ਦੋ ਟੁਕੜੇ ਹੋਇ ਗਿਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਚਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਰਾੜ ਨੇ ਆਇ ਪਤਾ ਕੀਆ।
ਜਿਸ ਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੀਚੇ ਕੀ ਨੀਲੀ ਪਗੜੀ ਮੇ ਸੇ ਫਰਰਾ ਨਿਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਇਹ ਖਾਲਸਾਈ ਝੰਡਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹੇਗਾ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਬਚਨ ਪਾਇ ਭਾਈ ਉਦੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੋਹਕਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਆਲਿਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਨੀਚੇ ਕੀਆ ਨੀਲੀਆਂ ਪਗੜੀਆਂ ਸੇ ਫਰਰਾ ਸਜਾ ਲਿਆ /ਫਤਹਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਤਰਫ ਦੇਖ ਪਗੜੀ ਉਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਫਰਰਾ ਸਜਾਏ ਲਿਆ।
ਬਚਨ ਹੋਆ ਫਤੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਫਰਰਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ ਮੇਂ ਸਦੀਵ ਕਾਲ ਚਾਲੂ ਰਹੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਕਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਝੰਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੁੱਲ ਹੋਇਗਾ।

 From Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s 52 Poets, Kavi Tahikann, write the following: (referenced in Amritsar Sifti da Ghar by Giaani Jung Singh [Sikh History Research Board/SGPC, Sri Amritsar Sahib]):
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਸੁਣਤ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਠੀਕੀ ਅਬ ਬਾਤ ਬਤਾਈ।
ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਬਣਾਵੋਂ ਐਸਾ ਜੋ ਕਬੀ ਟੂਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ।
ਨੀਲੰਬਰ ਪੀਤੰਬਰ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਫਰਰਾ ਅਜਬ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ।
ਏਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੇ ਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਝੂਲੈ ਏਕ ਸੀ ਲਹਿਰਾਵੈ।
ਸੀਸ ਨੀਕੋ ਸੋ ਠੀਕ ਸਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਠੀਕ ਛੂਟੈ ਫਰਰਾ ਜਿਹਦੀ ਛਬ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ।
ਪੰਚ ਭੁਜੰਗੀ ਉਠਾਏ ਕੇ ਪਾਸ ਤੇ ਪਾਚੋਂ ਦੀ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਲੁਹਾਲੀ।
ਪਾਚੋਂ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਲੈ ਫਰਰਾ ਮੁਖੋ ਕਿਹਾ ਇਹ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਕਾਲੀ।
ਅਕਾਲ ਅਕਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਕਵਿ ਟਹਿਕਣ ਗੂੰਜਿਆ ਗਿਰ ਸ਼ਿਵਾਲੀ।

ਆਲਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਉਦੇ ਸਿੰਘ, ਹਿੰਮਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁਜਾਨ॥

 Since Puratan times, whoever had done difficult seva for 12 years, they would receive a Far’raa from 5 Far’raa adorning Singhs. Those who have a Far’raa cannot rest while lying down. Rather, they sleep while sitting. Budha Dal’s Jathedar Baba Karam Singh (Dandia Wale) kept this maryada their entire life and never sought the comfort of having a roof over their head. Singhs adorning a Far’raa, will read “Far’rey da Salok” (you can read this Salok in the Panth’s Nitnem) at both times mandated to do Kangha seva of Kes.
 Spiritual Abhyasi's (people who Jap a lot of Naam &/or recite a lot of Gurbani) state that similarly to how the Brahmin only keeps a small lock of hair aligned with the Dasam Dwar (Tenth Gate)... the Kesdhaari (those who keep their kes), Neeldhari (those who wear blue) Nihung Singhs adorn a Far’raa aligned with the Dasam Dwar.

Daas has not translated references in fear they may become watered down but the Kavi Tehikann reference might be translated as part of Darbari Rattan series. Daas has hopes that if you do not have a strong command of Gurmukhi, then it should be a priority to learn first before you delve into the depths of these texts.
