Dark Blue (Neela) Akaali Baana
Puratan Nihung Singhs wore Dark Blue-Coloured Baana (Royal Robes). This Blue-Coloured Baana is referred to as Akaali Baana. Even today, Misl Shaheedan Tarna Dal’s 15th Leader Baba Gajjan Singh Ji, Sant Gurdev Singh Ji Shaheedi Baagh, Baba Nihaal Singh Ji Harian Belaa, and Baba Tarsem Singh Ji Tarna Dal Mehta Chowk among other respected Mahapurakhs (Saints) wear Blue Baana. Majority of Nihung Singhs in Misl Shaheedan Tarna Dal wear Blue-Coloured Baana. Kalgidhar Maharaj Ji writes about Blue Baana in Ugardanti Bani:
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਪੰਥ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਥ ਤੀਸਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸਾ॥ ਜਗੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੋਧਾ ਧਰੇ ਨੀਲ ਭੇਸਾ॥
This means that among Hindus and Turks there is now a Third Khalsa Panth born.
Blue Baana is also spoken of by Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prophecy (Karninama). Stating that at some time there will be a Blue-colour wearing Panth and will rule over all of Humanity:
ਫੌਜ ਫਿਰੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਕੀ ਮਕੜੀ ਨਿਆਈਂ ਹੋਇ॥ ਨੀਲਾ ਬਾਨਾ ਪਹਰ ਕੇ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੇ ਕੋਇ॥
Bhai Gurdas Sahib Ji writes that the Panj Piaare wore Blue Coloured Clothing when the Khalsa Panth formed in 1699 CE (41st Vaar)):
ਇਉ ਉਪਜੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਭੁਜੰਗੀਏ, ਨੀਲੰਬਰ ਧਾਰਾ॥

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਹੱਲਾ ਦਸਵਾਂ, ਸਾਲ ਸਤਰਾਂ ਸੈ ਪਚਾਵਨ ਬੈਸਾਖੀ ਕੇ ਦਿਹੁ ਪਾਓ ਸਿੱਖੋ ਕੋ ਖਾਂਡੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਹੁਲ ਦੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਉਂ ਰਾਖਾ।ਪ੍ਰਥਮੈ ਦੈਆ ਰਾਮ ਸੋਬਤੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਨਾ। ਸਬ ਕੋ ਨੀਲ ਅੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਨਾਏ॥ਵਹੀ ਬੈਸ ਆਪਨਾ ਕੀਆ।ਹੁਕਾ ਹਲਾਲ ਹਜਾਮਤ ਹਰਾਮ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਜੰਜੂ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰਾਇਆ।
In this same way, there are testimonies of Nihung Singhs wearing Blue Coloured Clothing in Bhai Kesar Singh Chhibar’s Bansavlinama (Dasaan Paatshaahiaa Ka, 1769).
ਤਾ ਸੀਸ ਕੇਸ ਰੱਖ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਕਰਨੇ।ਕੱਛ ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਬੰਧਵਾਇ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਨੇ।ਮਹਾਂ ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ਬਾਣਾ ਨੀਲਾ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਣਾ। ਕਰਨਾ ਜੁਧ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਰਕਾਂ ਕੋ ਮਾਰ ਹਟਾਵਣਾ।
Also Baba Saroop Daas Bhalla writes about the formation of the Khalsa through the first Khande-Pahul ceremony. Following the section “Mirjaad Pargutt Keeaa Sirlekh'', there is a mention of Blue Baana being adorned by the Khalsa
(Mehma Prakaash, Part 2, Khand 2, 1776):
ਤਵ ਤਨ ਪੰਥ ਮਿਰਜਾਦ ਭਰੇ ਧਰੇ ਕਲਕੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼। ਸੀਸ ਕੇਸ ਨੀਲ ਅੰਬਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਙਿਆ ਤੇਜ ਨਿਵਾਸ।
In Shaheed Bilaas, when Bhai Seva Singh Ji blesses (through Punj Piaare Seva) Bhai Mani Singh and Other Singhs with the Gift of Amrit, it is explained specifically that They wore Blue Coloured Clothing:
ਪਾਂਚ ਚੁਲੀ ਮੱਧ ਆਂਖਨ ਡਾਰ ਹੈ, ਪਾਂਚ ਚੂਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੇਸਨ ਪਾਯੋ।ਸੇਵਾ ਹਰੀ ਨੀਲੰਬਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ, ਤਨ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੂ ਕੇ ਸਜਾਯੋ।
In Twaarikh Sikha (written by Khush-Waqt-Rai in 1904), it states that all Singhs wore Blue Baana:
ਵ ਲਿਬਾਸਿ ਨੀਲ ਗੂੰ ਅਖ਼ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕਰਦ॥
Also, Principal Satbir Singh Ji writes that when the Saahibzaadey appeared in the Suba (State Government)’s Court that They wore Blue coloured Cholay (Purakh Bhagwant, page 188).
The Blue Colour is a sign of infiniteness. Kalgidhar Maharaj Ji refers to Akaal Purakh as “ਨੀਲ ਬਸਨ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ'' and also had the Khalsa wear the Colour Blue.
That is why during Kalgidhar Ji’s Time and afterwards, all poets & scholars remember the Blue Baana being worn upon the creation of The Khalsa. Even the present-day Panth of Nihung Singhs still adorn this Baana. It is a unique way to identify them.
