Commentary Series
This is an introduction to the Gurmat commentary series to be shared on this site. The purpose of these commentaries is to view the writings/content of the world through the Blessed Eyes of the Guru.
Giaan Anjan Gur Deeaa Agiaan Andher Binaas||
(Sri Sukhmani Sahib, Mahulla 5jva):
Maharaj has blessed us with the mascara of Brahmgiaan, when we wear this metaphorical mascara then agiaan (spiritual ignorance) becomes destroyed.
Bhai Gurdas Ji beautifully puts it:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੰਸੀ ਪਰਮਹੰਸ ਖੀਰ ਨੀਰ ਨਿਰਨਉ ਚੁੰਜਿ ਵੀੜੀ।
Gurmukh[i] Vansee Paramhans Kheer Neer Nirno[u] Chunj[i] Veerhee|
The Gurmukhs are from the same lineage as the Paramhans (An Angelic Swan-like Being) because They can separate milk from water (a Gurmukh can take this Manifestation of Maya and use it as a Reflection of the Divine Truth)
Silaa AlooNee ChataNee MaaNak Mothee Chogn[i]|
The mundane world is limited to licking tasteless stones, the Paramhans/Gurmukhs peck on the Jewels & Pearls of Truth
using Their Special Spiritually-Attuned Minds (blessed by Akaal Purakh).
Raag Maajh, Mahulla 3ja:
Gurparsaadhee Houmai Khovai||
Through GurPrasaad; the ego is lost.
Anthar[i] Bibaek[u] Sadaa Aap[u] Veechaarae GurSabadhee GuN GaavaNiaaa||
Internally, we maintain Bibek, always contemplating about our own existence... through the Guru's Shabad, the True Virtues radiate & we sing of These Qualities of Akaal Purakh.
This way of thinking is centered around Bibek/Vivek. Turning the Misperceived World of Duality into correctly perceiving the Reality of Ik. The term "Bibek/Vivek" has been distorted to mean using reason/rationale but it's far from this. The mind has been conditioned to act out of ego. When we bombard the mind with Gurbani & Naam Simran then we begin to unlearn the ignorance of ego. Our way of thinking gets replaced by Guru Sahib's Consciousness. This Harmony will give you real freedom.
The term "ego" in English is generally assumed to mean arrogance (Haumai-Garab) but the "ego" that is mentioned the most (within Gurbani) is the perception of having an individual identity (Haumai-Mamta).
The ego causes the separation of two.
Through Kirtan, Katha, Vichaar, Gurbani Uchaaran, and especially Naam Simran... you move closer and closer to becoming one with Akaal Purakh.
This entire manifested universe is made by Vaheguru, we can see glimpses of Vaheguru within It. These commentaries are meant to encourage the readers to develop a deeper relationship with Gurbani and to unlearn misconceptions about the individual self/Sikhi overall. They are not meant to be an overarching authority on understanding Gurbani, there are Steeks especially made for this purpose.
As much as Sangat may like to read these types of posts, daas benefits way more in writing them because he is drowning in this world-ocean. As a means to grow closer to Guru Sahib (The Rescue Boat), daas sits down to reflect on the Unreachable Expanse of the Cosmic Body of Gurbani. All of these efforts are to get Maharaj's Searchlight to spot daas. So please forgive any mistakes.
