Bihungam Nihung Singhs

The term ‘Bihungam’ refers to those Nihung Singhs who do not get married. Bihungam means bird. Like a bird, the Bihungam Nihung Singh flies high above the world; detached. Puratan Bihungam Singhs used to live in the Dal Panth, Historic places attached to Guru Sahib, and Panthic Encampments. Managing Gurdwaras was the responsibility of Bihungams. In current times, Bihungam Singhs still live in the Dal Panth and Chhaunis. Among Nihung Singhs, the greatness of a Bihungam is measured to be greater than that of a householder. But living as a Bihungam is extremely hard. The Maryada of Bihungam Singhs is recorded in Bhai Daya Singh’s Rehatnaamey as the following:
ਜਗਤ ਮੇਂ ਮਾਯਾ ਕਾ ਸੰਗ ਤਯਾਗ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੈ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੋ ਦੇਖਤ ਭਾਗੋ, ਧਨ ਕੇ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੇ, ਸਵਾ ਗਜ ਦੀ ਕੱਛ ਰਾਖੈ, ਏਕ ਸਰਬਲੋਹ ਕਾ ਗੜਵਾ ਰਾਖੈ, ਏਕਾਕੀ ਬਿਚਰੇ ਧਾਤੁ (ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ) ਕੋ ਸ਼ਪਰਸ ਨ ਕਰੇ, ਸ਼ਹਰ ਮੈਂ ਨ ਰਹੈ, ਘੋੜੇ ਸੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਔਰ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ਪੈ ਨ ਚੜੈ, ਔਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਮੈਂ ਫਿਰਤਾ ਰਹੈ। ਬੇਦੀ, ਭੱਲਾ, ਤੇਹਨ, ਉਦਾਸੀ, ਸੋਢੀ ਇਨ ਕੋ ਨਿੰਦੇ ਨਾਹੀ, ਜੋ ਕਰਮ ਤੀਨ ਕਾਲ ਮੋਂ ਕਹੇ ਹੈ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਕੇ, ਸੋ ਚੌਗੁਨੇ ਕਰੇ ਤੋ ਸੁਧ ਹੋ, ਦਵੈ ਚਾਦਰੇ ਰਖੇ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਤਜੈ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੇ ਹਾਥ ਕਾ ਅੰਨ ਜਲੁ ਨ ਛਕੇ ਇਤਿਆਦਿਕ ਬਚਨ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਨ।
Within Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, Bhagat Kabeer Ji states that the one whose mind is unwavering, steadily and concentrated is a real Bihungam:
ਰਹੈ ਬਿਹੰਗਮ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ॥
Kalgidhar Maharaj have written that someone becomes sanniyasi (Bihungam) when their mind becomes udaas (detached) from the world.
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੋ ਕਰ ਸੰਨਿਆਸਾ॥
ਬਨ ਸੇ ਸਦਨ ਸਭੈ ਕਰ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ॥
In Mahan Kosh, Bihungam is described to be like the sun... having the bright & shining (tejasvi) glory of a warrior (soorbir).
