Guru Sahib continues to narrate the discussion between Sri Krishna Ji and Arjan. Arjan is still trying to quit this battle and Sri Krishna Ji tells him to go to battle using aatma gyaan.

ਆਗੇ ਧਿਆਇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਚਲਿਆ ॥
Next is the 2nd Adhiyaye:

ਸੰਜਿਓ ਵਾਚ ॥ Sanjay says:
ਚੌਪਈ ॥ (Chaupaee)
ਹੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਯਿਉ ਪੇਖੇ ॥
Oh King (Hae Raajaa) look towards Sri Krishna Ji
(Madhhsoodhan Yio[u] Paekhae)
ਅਤ ਬਿਆਕਲ ਅਰਜਨ ਕੌ ਦੇਖੇ ॥
Seeing that Arjun (Arjan Kau Daekhae) is so frightened (Ath Biaakal)
ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥
Sri Krishna Ji says to him (This Ko Aakhai Shri Bhagwaan)
ਹੇ ਅਰਜਨ ਤੂੰ ਸਮਾ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
Oh Arjun, You need to realize the time (Hae Arjun Thoo[n] Samaa Pachhaan[u]; meaning look at the circumstances/context you’re in)

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨੋਵਾਚ ॥ Sri Krishna Ji Bachans:

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ (Chaupaee)
ਹੇ ਅਰਜਨ ਇਸ ਬਿਖੜੀ ਠਉਰ ॥
Oh Arjun (Hae Arjun), you’re stuck in a difficult place (Eis Bikhrhee Tto[u]r)
ਮਨ ਕੋ ਸੋਗ ਮਹਾਂ ਮਤ ਜੋੜ ॥
Join great wisdom (Mahaa[n] Math Jorrh) to the sadness of your mind (Man Ko Sog)
ਅਰ ਜੋ ਨੀਚ ਬਾਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਕਹੈ ॥
... and that lowly thing (Ar Jo Neech Baath[i]) you have said (Thoo[n] Kahai)
ਤਿਸਤੇ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਮਾਰਗ ਨਹੀ ਲਹੇਂ ॥੨॥
From this (Thisthae), you’ll never obtain the path to Heaven/Bliss
(Swarag Maarag Nahee Lahae[n])
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮਾਂਹਿ ਭੀ ਕੀਰਤ ਨਾਂਹਿ ॥
Even in this world (Sa[n]saar Maa[a]h[i] Bhee), you will not be praised (Keerat Naa[a]h[i])
ਹੀਜੌ ਕੀ ਬਾਤੈ ਮਤ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
Don’t sing the songs of the eunuchs (Heejau Kee Baathai Mat Gaah[i])
ਤਤ ਬਾਤ ਤੂੰ ਸਮਝੇ ਨਾਂਹੀ ॥
You did not understand the essence of your circumstances (Thath Baath Thoo[n] Samjhae Naa[a]hee)
ਤਾਂਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਭੈ ਕੋ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ ੩ ॥
That is why you have developed this fear/anxiety (Thaa[a]thae Thoo[n] Eis Bhai Ko Paah[i]
ਨੀਚ ਪਰਕਿਰਤ ਕੌ ਬੇਗ ਤਿਆਗ ॥
Quickly let go (Baeg Thiaag) of this lowly task (Neech Parkirath Kau)
ਸਮਾਂ ਪਹਿਚਾਨ ਜੁਧ ਸੌ ਲਾਗ ॥
Understand the time/circumstance (Samaa[n] Pahichaan) and focus on the war ahead (Judhh Sau Laag)
ਜਗਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਤਬ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ॥
Renounce the world, then you will become whole
(Jagath Thiaag Thab Pooran Ho)
ਜੈਸਾ ਕਹੇ ਕਰੇ ਹੈ ਸੋ ॥
Just do as you’re told
(Jaisaa Kahae Karae Hai So)

ਅਰਜਨੋਵਾਚ ॥ Arjan says:
ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ ਸੇ ਮੂਲ ਨ ਲੜੋਂ ॥
I will absolutely not fight with Duryodhan
(Durjodhhan Sae n Larhho[n])
ਖੇਤ ਮਾਂਹਿ ਕੈਰਵ ਸੋਂ ਟਰੌਂ ॥ ੪ ॥
I am avoiding the Kaurava on the battlefield
(Khaeth Maa[n]h[i] Kairav So[n] Tarau[n])

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ (Doharaa)
ਅਰਜਨ ਜਬ ਐਸੋ ਸੁਨਿਓ ਕਹਿਓ ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਮਾਂਹਿ ॥
After hearing what Sri Krishna Ji has said, Arjun said:
(Arjan Jab Aiso Sunio Kahio Madhhsoodhan Maa[n]h[i])
ਹੇ ਸਖੇ ਹੇ ਸਤ੍ਰਨਾਸ ਅਬ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਨਹੋ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ ੫ ॥
Oh True Friend, Oh Enemy-Destroyer, you should listen now (Hae Sakhae Hae Sathrnaas Ab Tum Sunho Thaah[i])

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ (Chaupaee)
ਭੀਖਮ ਅਉਰ ਦੌ੍ਨਾਚਾਰਜ ॥
About Bheekham and Dronacharya
(Bheekham Aour Dhraunaachaaraj)
ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਗ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ॥
The entire world should worship them
(Sabh Hee Jag Poojaa Kae Kaaraj)
ਇਨ ਕੀ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
In this way, we should do pooja of them in different ways
(Ein Kee Bahu Bidhh Poojaa Keejai)
ਇਨ ਕੌ ਮਾਰ ਰਾਜ ਕਿਆ ਲੀਜੈ ॥ ੬ ॥
Killing them, which type of reign will be received?
(Ein Kau Maar Raaj Kiaa Leejai)
ਕਉਨ ਵੇਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਂਹਿ ॥
Who is referenced in the Vedas and Shaastras
(Koun Vaedh Shaasthar Kae Maa[n]h[i])
ਗੁਰ ਦਾਦਾ ਮਾਰਨ ਕਿਨ ਗਾਂਹਿ ॥
to praise the act of killing a Guru or Grandfather?
(Gur Dhaadhaa Maaran Kin Gaa[n]h[i]; elders and respected authority figures)
ਅਉਰ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਲੋਗ ਨਹਿ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
we should not kill the other family members [either]
(Aour Kuta[m]b Log Mah[i] Maaro)
ਮਹਾ ਪਾਪ ਮੈ ਰਿਦੇ ਬਿਚਾਰੌ ॥੭॥
This is a great sin, look in your heart and reflect upon this
(Mahaa Paap Mai Ridhae Bichaarau)
ਜੋ ਇਨ ਮਾਰ ਰਾਜ ਕੌ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Whoever kills them and gains a kingdom
(Jo Ein Maar Raaj Kau Paavai)
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਰੁਧਰ ਸਰਬਦਾ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
Everything they possess will be destroyed
(Thin Ka Rudhhar Sarbdhaa Khaavai; will be eaten by Shiv Ji)
ਅਰ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੋ ਮੀਤ ॥
And recognize these words and realize my friend
(Ar Eih Baath Pahichaano Meeth)
ਹਮ ਜੀਤੇਂ ਕੇ ਹਮ ਕੌ ਜੀਤ ॥
Are we conquering or the ones being conquered?
(Ham Jeethae[n] Kae Ham Kau Jeeth)
ਯਹੀ ਬਾਤ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
These words I’m convicted of and know
(Yahee Baath Nischai Mai[n] Jaanee)
ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਰਤ ਕਲਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੮॥
When a loved one dies, no one accepts this as blissful
(Mithr Marath Kaliaan[u] n Maanee)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ (Doharaa)
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮ ਜੋ ਉਚਰਿਓ ਮੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਐਸੀ ਬਾਤ ॥
Oh Krishna Ji, what you have said to me, these words…
(Hae Prabh Thum Jo Ouchario Mujh Prath[i] Aisee Baath)
ਨੀਚ ਬੁਧਿ ਇਸ ਸਮੈ ਮੈ ਤੈਂ ਕਿਉ ਲੀਨੀ ਤਾਤ ॥੯॥
… are not wise at this time and how can I accept them right now?
(Neech Budhh[i] Eis Samai Mai Thai[n] Kio[u] Leenee Thaath)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ (Doharaa)
ਅਬ ਹਮ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਸਮਝ ਹੌ ਸਭ ਬੁਧਿ ਦਈ ਤਿਆਗ ॥
Now I do not understand [what to do] I have let go of all of my thoughts
(Ab Ham Kachh[u] n Samajho Hau Sabh Budhh[i] Dhaee Thiaag)
ਸਰਨ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਮੈਂ ਪੜਾ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸੋ ਲਾਗ ॥੧੦॥
I have fallen at your Lotus Feet and have come to Your Sanctuary
(Saran Thumaaree Mai[n] Parhaa Charan Kamal So Laag)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ (Doharaa)
ਜਿਸਮੌ ਮੁਝ ਕਲਿਆਨ ਹੋ ਸੋਈ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
That which will lead to my Kalyaan, please advise me of that
(Jismau Mujh Kaliaan Ho Soee Bathaavahu Moh[i])
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਹੋ ਅਬ ਮੈ ਸਿਖ ਹੌ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
Bless me with Your Kirpa, referring to You as Prabhu, I am Your Sikh
(Kripa Karakai Prabh Kaho Ab Mai Sikh Hau Thoh[i])

ਚੌਪਈ ॥ (Chaupaee)
ਐਸੇ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਮੁਝੈ ਨਿਕਾਸੋ ॥
Take me out of such suffering (Aisae Dhukh Thae Mujhai Nikaaso)
ਸੂਕੀ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਕਲਿਆਨ ਮੋ ਨਾ ਸੋ ॥
The senses have dried up and cannot bring me Kalyan (Sookee Ei[n]dhree Kaliaan Mo Naa So)
ਸੁਭ ਬਾਤ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
I cannot envision a good idea (Subh Baath Moh[i] Dhist[i] n Aavai)
ਜਦਪ ਰਾਜ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੨॥
even if I want the reign of Trilok (Jadhap Raaj Thrilokee Paavai)
ਭੂਮ ਪਤਾਲ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਕਾ ਰਾਜ ॥
The reign of Earth, Hells, Heavens (Bhoom Pathaal Swarag Ka Raaj)
ਇਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਲਿ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਕਾਜ ॥
… there is no task/work which is valued as much as them
(Ein Kae Thul[i] Nahee Ko Kaaj)
ਸਭ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ ਜਦਪ ਹਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
Even if I were to receive reign of it all (Sabh Hee Raaj Jadhap Ho[u] Paaeae)
ਤਉ ਭੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਦੁਖ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਏ ॥
Even the, my suffering will not go away (Tho[u] Bhee Maeraa Dhukh Nahee Jaaeae)
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਗਹੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥
Oh Sri Krishna Ji, I have come to Your Sanctuary (Thumree Saran[i] Gahee Bhagwaan)
ਜੋ ਸੁਭ ਜਾਨੌ ਕਰੌ ਬਖਾਨ ॥੧੩॥
Whatever you know to be good [advice], please tell me (Jo Subh Jaanau Karau Bakhaan)

ਸੰਜਿਓਵਾਚ ॥ (Sanjay says)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ (Doharaa)
ਸੰਜੇ ਕਹੇ ਧਿਤਰਾਸ਼ਟ੍ਰ ਪੈ ਸੁਨੌ ਰਾਜ ਕੇ ਧਨੀ ॥
Sanjay says to Dhritrashtra: Listen Oh King (Wealthy with Reign) (Sa[n]jae Kahae Dhritrashtra Pai Sunau Raaj Kae Dhanee)
ਅਰਜਨ ਜਬ ਇਹੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਰਿਖੀਕੇਸ ਪੈ ਭਨੀ ॥੧੪॥
when Arjan humbly requested to Sri Krishna Ji
(Arjan Jab Eih(u) Baenthee Rikheekaes Pai Bhanee)
ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥ (Soratta)
ਅਰਜਨ ਕਹੇ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਣ ਬਾਸਦੇਵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ॥
Arjan said these words (Arjan Kahae Eih Baath): Please listen Perfect Sri Krishna Ji (SuN Baasdhaev Pooran Prabhoo)
ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਨ ਕਰੋ ਇਨ ਸਾਥ ਕਿਸੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਯਹਿ ਕਹਤ ਹੋ ॥੧੫॥
Please tell me a way (Kisee Bidhh Yah[i] Kahath Ho)
to not get into battle with them (Sa[n]graam n Karo Ein Saathh)

ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥ (Soratta)
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਸੁਨੀ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਤਬ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਤ ਭਏ ॥
When Sri Krishna Ji heard (Jab Eih Sunee Gopaal Thab),
They said from Their Beautiful Mouth (Mukh Thae Bolath Bhae):
ਸੁਣ ਅਰਜਨ ਬੇਹਾਲ ਸਾਂਖ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੁਝ ਕਹਤ ਹੌ ॥੧੬॥
Listen Arjan (SuN Arjan), the Shaastras and other texts which you mentioned are the ones that (Saa[n]kh Shaasthr Tujh Kahath Hau) put you in such a bad state (Baehaal)

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨੋਵਾਚ ॥ (Sri Krishna Ji Bachans)
ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ ॥ (Savaiya)
ਸੁਧੀ ਬਿਬੇਕੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਗਿਯਾਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੋਂ ਸੁਨ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
The Pure Discerning Pandit Giaanis, listen to what they have to say
(Sudhhee Bibaeki Pa[n]dith Giyaanee Thin Kee Baath Kaho[n] Sun Leejai)
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
The things which you don’t have to worry about, what do you get from worrying about them?
(Jis Kee Chi[n]thaa Naahee Karnee This Kee Chi[n]thaa Kahu Kiaa Keejai)
ਜੋ ਜਨਮੇਂ ਸੋ ਨਿਸਚੇ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਨਾਸਤ ਬਾਤ ਕਿਆ ਚਿਤ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
Whatever is born must die, so why take on these thoughts about [someone's] death
(Jo Janamae[n] So Nischae Binsae Naasath Baath Kiaa Chith Dhhareejai)
ਦੇਹ ਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਜੀਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
The body is mortal, the Jiv-Aatma is Immortal (Dhaeh Binaasee Jeeo[u] Abinaasee)
ਤਿਨ ਪੁਰਖੋ ਕੌ ਐਸੇ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੧੭॥
Listen to these Great Beings and Their Understanding

ਅਰਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਆਖੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
Sri Krishna Ji say to Arjan
(Arjan Prath[i] Aakhae Gopaal)
ਸੁਨ ਅਰਜਨ ਪਾਂਡੇ ਕੇ ਲਾਲ ॥
Listen Arjan, Oh beloved son of the Paandavs
(Sun Arjan Paa[n]Dae Kae Laal)
ਅਉਰ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ॥
In other ways, will make you understand
(Aour Bhaa[n]th[i] Mai Thujh Samjhaavai)
ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਤਪਤ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥੧੮॥
[in order to] extinguish the fire of your mind
(Thaerae Man Kee Thapath Bujhaavai)
ਇਹ ਜੋ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਠਾਢੇ ॥
The Princes that are standing in front of you (Eih Jo Sanmukh Raajaa TtaDhae)
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਕਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈਂ ਬਾਂਧੇ ॥
they will not die from your own power (Thaeree Sakath[i] n Jaavai[n] Baa[n]dhhae)
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ਨ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਾਥ ॥
Their deaths are not in your hand (Thin Kaa Naas[u] n Thaerai Haathh)
ਕਰਮ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੇ ਗਾਥ ॥੧੯॥
You don’t look at the bigger picture of Karams (Karam Chithr n Jaanae Gaathh) ਜਗ ਮੈਂ ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
The world is built on coming and going
(Jag Mai[n] Aavaa Gavan Banaaee)
ਜੋ ਆਵੈ ਸੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
That which comes does not remain permanent
(Jo Aavai So Thhir[u] n Rahaaee)
ਇਹ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਆਂਹੀ ॥
listen to how these kings have come to be
(Eih Raajaa Sun Kaisae Aa[n]hee)
ਆਗੇ ਭੀ ਥੇ ਹੁਣ ਹੀ ਨਾਂਹੀ ॥ ੨੦ ॥
There will be Kings in the future, there were Kings in the past who are now dead
(Aagai Bhee Thhae HuN Hee Naa[n]hee)
ਪਾਛੇ ਹੋਤੇ ਆਇ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
All who have came, became lost in the past (Paachae Hothae Aaei Saarae)
ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ ਸੁਣ ਪਾਰਥ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Listen Oh Arjan, These type of kings exist now (HuN Bhee Hai[n] Paarathh Piaarae)
ਆਗੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇਂਗੇ ਮੀਤ ॥
And will exist in the future as well (Aagai Bhee Hovae[n]gae Meeth)
ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਦੇਹ ਕੀ ਰੀਤ ॥੨੧॥
Coming and Going is the Nature of the Body (Aavaagavan Dhaeh Kee Reeth)
ਪੁਦਗਲ ਕੀ ਅਬ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੋ ਤੁਮ ॥
Listen to a few words about the nature of the body (Pudhgal Kee Ab Baath Suno Thum)
ਬਾਲਕ ਤਰਨ ਬਿਰਧ ਹੈ ਜਿਮ ॥
Just like childhood, youth, and old age are accepted to be the stages of life (Baalak Tharan Biradhh Hai Jim)
ਚਤ੍ਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਮਿਰਤ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
Know the fourth stage to be death (Chathr Avasthhaa Mirath Thum Jaano)
ਯਹ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਦੇਹ ਕੇ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨੨॥
Accept this to be the Dharam of the Body (Yah Sabh Dhharam Dhaeh Kae Maano)
–
Arjan seemed to be making a logical argument but Sri Krishna Ji begins to break it up and presents him with subtle truths. Before we make a decision or begin to judge, we should reflect on the ego's intention. Sri Krishna Ji is telling Arjan that death is inevitable and that death is not in his hands. Please forgive any mistakes. This adhiyaye has 176 chhands vs the previous (64 chhands); each translation section, so there will be a longer interval between posts!
